Setting up Safe Exam Browser in Moodle

For instructors: Configuring Safe Exam Browser

Instructors can enhance exam security by requiring the use of Safe Exam Browser (SEB) for Moodle quizzes. SEB prevents students from accessing unauthorized resources or switching applications during an exam.

Follow the steps demonstrated in the video to configure SEB for your quiz.

Ensure that:

  • The quiz is properly configured before making it available to students.

  • The correct SEB configuration settings or startup link are provided to students in advance.

For students: Taking a quiz using Safe Exam Browser

Students must download and install Safe Exam Browser to access and take the quiz if SEB is required. Quizzes configured with SEB cannot be opened in standard browsers.

Students could follow the video guide below to prepare their devices and launch SEB correctly.

Before the quiz:

  • Download and install Safe Exam Browser from the official SEB website.

  • Use the quiz link or SEB configuration file provided by the instructor to start the quiz.

  • Launch SEB and log in to Moodle as shown in the video.

During the quiz:

  • Remain in SEB until the quiz is submitted.

  • Do not attempt to switch to other applications or exit SEB prematurely.

Additional information

  • Safe Exam Browser is supported on Windows, macOS, and some iOS devices.

  • For questions or issues, contact moodle@colby.edu or support@colby.edu before the quiz begins.
