Using Safe Exam Browser (SEB) in Moodle

This guide explains the steps to take a test in Moodle using Safe Exam Browser (SEB), a secure browser designed to prevent access to other websites and applications during the online test.

1. Install Safe Exam Browser (SEB)

Before starting the exam, you need to install SEB on your computer. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the Safe Exam Browser download page.
  2. Download the SEB application for your operating system (Windows or macOS).
  3. Install the application on your device. Ensure SEB is in your Applications folder, not in your Downloads folder.

2. Open Moodle and Select the Exam

To begin the exam:

  1. Open your web browser and go to the Moodle login page.
  2. Log in with your Moodle credentials.
  3. Navigate to the course where your exam is located.
  4. Click on the exam link to open the test page.

3. Download the Configuration File

Once you've opened the exam:

  1. Click Download configuration to download the configuration file for the exam. This file is typically named config.seb.
  2. The file will be saved in your Downloads folder.

4. Open the Configuration File in SEB

To begin the exam securely:

  1. Go to your Downloads folder.
  2. Double-click on the config.seb file you just downloaded.
  3. SEB will launch automatically and open Moodle in a locked-down exam environment. This restricts access to other websites or applications while you take the test.
  4. Navigate to the exam and click Attempt quiz now.

5. Enter the Password and Start the Exam

Some exams may require a password to begin:

  1. Enter the password provided by your instructor to start the exam.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the exam.

6. Submit the Exam and Quit Safe Exam Browser (SEB)

After completing the exam:

  1. When you're done, click Submit to submit your answers.
  2. SEB will close the exam and allow you to exit the program.
  3. From the SEB menu, choose Quit SEB.
  4. Some exams may require a password to quit. When prompted, enter the quit password provided by your instructor.

SEB will exit, and you’ll be redirected back to the normal browsing environment.

Conclusion:

By following these steps, you can securely take your exam in Moodle using Safe Exam Browser (SEB). If you encounter any issues during the process, refer to the Safe Exam Browser Documentation, contact your instructor, or contact support@colby.edu for further assistance.
