Transcribing Audio with Kaltura

This document provides information on how to export machine captioning information for a Kaltura audio or video entry.

  1. Log into Kaltura (https://video.colby.edu/user/login)
  2. Click on Add New > Media Upload

  3. Drag-and-drop your audio or video file, or click Choose a file to upload. Most media formats can be imported.
  4. As it uploads, set metadata fields as you would for any Kaltura video.
    • Be sure to take note of the Publishing Status.
  5. Click Save and then Go To Media.
  6. Click on Actions > Captions & Enrich.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  7. Caption processing may take some time to complete. When the caption is ready, it will be marked as such.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  8. By default, the machine transcription service will attempt to caption in the English language. If the language is something other than English, select the appropriate option from the Source Media Language dropdown box and click Submit. At the popup box, click Resubmit to reprocess in the appropriate language.

  9. To review your caption, click on the pencil icon next to it. This will open the Closed Captions Editor.
    1. Ensure the appropriate language is selected at the top
    2. Caption timings and text are displayed on the left; the media entry on the right.
    3. As the video is played, the appropriate timing will be highlighted.
    4. Transcription text and timings can be modified, added, or removed on a per-line basis.
    5. Changes will need to be saved by clicking Save in the upper right of the page.
    6. When saved and completed, click Back.
  10.  To export the transcription file, follow these steps:
    1. At the entry's main page, click Actions > Edit.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
    2. Click on the Captions tab.
    3. Under the Actions column, click on the download icon for the language you wish to download
    4. Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)This will save an SRT file to your computer.
  11. SRT files are caption files, readable by a text editor, which also include timing information.
