Moodle grading annotation is a built-in tool for instructors to directly mark up student assignment submissions (usually PDFs or converted files) with highlights, text boxes, shapes, stamps, and freehand drawings. This provides in-line feedback alongside standard grade entry and overall comments in a right-hand panel, streamlining the grading process within Moodle.

How to Use Moodle Annotation:

  1. Go to your Moodle course and open the specific Assignment activity.
  2. Click View all submissions.
  3. Click the Grade button next to a student's name.
  4. Click the button to collapse the grade panel (small icon) to show the annotation toolbar in the grading interface.
  5. Annotate using the toolbar to:
    • Add Text Comments: Create text boxes, customize color, and save comments for reuse.
    • Highlight: Select text and highlight it with chosen colors.
    • Draw/Shape: Use freehand drawing or shapes (lines, circles).
    • Add Stamps: Use pre-set stamps like checkmarks or X's.
    • Add Media: Insert files, images, or even video/audio comments in the feedback panel.
  6. Enter the overall grade and summary feedback in the right-hand grading panel.
  7. Click Save changes or Save and show next to move to the next student.
