Filer - Campus Network File Share System
Some users will find there is an added value to keeping file based information locally.
These could be because of
- Automatic integration with web services or the HPC system.
- Speed for calculation (compute and data should always be as close as possible)
- Strict handling of sensitive data,
- Grant stipulated constraints (eg: NSF Data Management requirements).
- Original data backup (eg from instrumentation or other sources)
For these reasons there is a local solution for you!
Filer makes data available across the campus network and over the VPN. The entire system is also continuously backed up to an equally secure off-campus location. Reverting changes or recovering accidentally deleted files is also facilitated by regular 'snapshots' of the current state of the system.
- Personal - \filer\personal\<userid> - Is your private 10gig share and often where your home directory is based
- USERID is your Colby email, without '@colby.edu'
- Courses - \filer\courses\<courseid> - Is course related material and public / private coursework areas
- Research - \filer\research\<PI_ID> -
- PI_ID where faculty (PI = Principle Investigator) sponsored research is based and instrument data is uploaded
- Instruments - \filer\research\<instrument> - Where data from a shared instrument is backed up
- (example <instrument>: xray) - The <instrument> can be provided by the faculty member or lab instructor.
