By default, Google Calendar accepts invitations from all senders, including those outside of Colby. As helpful as this may be, scammers are currently exploiting this setting to place fraudulent events on calendars without consent.
Here are steps that will help assist reporting and preventing spam events from appearing on your calendar.
How to Report Spam Events on your Calendar
If a suspicious or unauthorized calendar event already appears, be sure not to click any links within the event and report it as spam.
- Open the event in Google Calendar.
- At the top right of the event details pop-up, click the More actions menu (three vertical dots).
- Select Report as spam. This will remove the event and flag the sender of the event.
How to Prevent Spam Events on your Calendar
To prevent spam events from automatically appearing on your calendar, you can change your Google calendar setting to allow only events from "known senders" to be added automatically. Known senders are those in your Google contacts, other Colby domain members and senders with whom you have previously interacted with. Additional information may be found on Google's support page.
- Open Google Calendar.
- In the top-right corner, click the gear icon and select Settings.

- On the left-hand menu, under General click Event settings.

- Find the drop-down menu labeled Add invitations to my calendar.
- Change the selection to Only if the sender is known.

These changes will apply to future invitations and do not affect events already on your calendar.
