Migrating from LastPass to Keeper

Keeper Password Manager

Keeper is a password management solution that helps create, store, and share credentials (logins and passwords) as well as secure notes between users.

Keeper is replacing LastPass, with support for Colby issued LastPass Enterprise accounts ending March 1, 2024. If you have created a free LastPass personal account, you may continue to use it as long as you desire. This change only impacts Colby-managed LastPass enterprise accounts.

Keeper offers a free family license for personal use. All Keeper Enterprise users can create a free, Keeper Family Plan for up to 5 family members with unlimited devices. This personal account will remain free on unlimited devices for as long as the business account is active. If your relationship with Colby ends, your Family license converts into a Keeper Free subscription. You may continue to use your personal license on one device, or purchase a Family or Unlimited subscription for all of the premium features. For more information, please visit https://docs.keeper.io/user-guides/tips-and-tricks/personal-and-business-vaults

Keeper Onboarding Experience

ITS will create your Keeper accounts. This process immediately triggers a welcoming email sent from Keeper directly to you. You will need to click on the yellow Set up and Sign In button provided in the welcoming email. Once clicked, you will be taken to the Keeper login page with your email address pre-populated in the Email Address field. You will then click the yellow Next button provided on the login page. This will direct you to Colby’s Okta login page. At this point, you would log into Okta with your Colby credentials. Upon successful login, you will be taken to your Keeper vault and successfully completed your Keeper account creation.

Existing LastPass Enterprise Users

If you are a current user of LastPass Enterprise account, you will need to migrate your data (your passwords) from your LastPass account to your Keeper account. You will be responsible for this migration, ITS can not do it for you. Please review the steps below, especially if your LastPass data includes shared folders.

Preparing to migrate data and what to watch out for

Keeper provides a utility that will migrate data from your LastPass account to your new Keeper account. The process is straightforward, however there are considerations to make if your LastPass vault contains shared items or folders - whether shared by you or with you. If you do not have any shared folders or items, you can skip ahead to the next section.

Issues with migrating shared items and folders

Shared data introduces a complication because while the shared item(s) and the data within will migrate to your account, the permissions of the shared item(s) will not be migrated. The data shared with others and data shared with you will need to be re-shared by the owner in the Keeper platform. For example, if three individuals have access to a shared folder, each individual will have the opportunity to migrate the share into a new, 'unshared' folder in their Keeper account. The three individuals will then need to coordinate the creation of a new shared folder in Keeper, and then delete any duplicate 'unshared' folder(s) from their own vaults.

To prevent this duplication ahead of time, you can identify data that may be shared by LastPass in the following ways:

  • Member of Shared Folders
  • Data shared with others
  • Data shared to you

This information is found in LastPass under the Sharing Center:

  1. Log in to LastPass to access your Password Vault
  2. Select Sharing Center in the left navigation.
  3. Click on Manage recipients for each shared folder to determine members of shared folders.

Before you start migration, unlink any personal accounts

If you have linked a free personal LastPass account to your LastPass Colby Enterprise account, you must unlink these accounts. This will prevent the accidental transfer of personal data from LastPass to your new Keeper enterprise account. If you do not have a linked account, you can skip ahead to the next section. If you are unsure if you have a linked personal account, check by navigating to Account Benefits in LastPass to check the status of any linked accounts.

To perform an unlink of accounts:

  1. Log in to LastPass Colby Enterprise account and access your vault by doing either of the following:
    • In your web browser toolbar, click the LastPass icon active LastPass icon and select Open My Vault.
    • Go to https://lastpass.com/?ac=1 and log in with your email address and master password.
  2. Select Account Benefits Options in the left navigation.
  3. Select Remove linked account.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.

Your personal LastPass account will be unchanged, and when you migrate your Colby LastPass account to Keeper it will not migrate your other, personal LastPass data.

Migrating data from LastPass to Keeper

Once you have assessed any shared items or folders and ensured there are no other LastPass accounts linked to your Colby LastPass account, you can begin migration using the following steps:

  1. Download and install the appropriate Keeper client for your operating system. Windows users click here, macOS users click here
  2. Login to Keeper Desktop using your Colby (@colby.edu) account. You will be authenticated by Colby's Okta single sign-on page.
  3. Click on your account email in the upper right-hand corner.
  4. Click Settings > Import and then choose LastPass
  5. Enter your LastPass login name, including @colby.edu. If you wish to migrate your shared folders as earlier described, please check Include shared folders - noting that you will need to work with others to ensure the shared folders are re-shared with the same people in Keeper, and that any duplicates are removed later on.

  6. Select Next.
  7. Enter your LastPass password. If you have two-factor authentication enabled for LastPass, be prepared to provide the code you receive through your authenticator app.
  8. Select Next.
  9. Enter your two-factor authentication code for LastPass.
  10. Select Next.
  11. Leave Import Root Level Folders as Shared as unchecked.
  12. Click Import.

Your LastPass data should now be migrated to your Keeper account. Please take some time to review your imported sites/items to make sure it looks correct.

Sharing in Keeper

If your import included shared items, please make sure to follow up with your colleagues (or whomever you had shared items with) to re-establish the sharing permissions. As mentioned previously in this article, pay attention to any duplicate items that were copied during the migration.

Directions on how to share Keeper folders may be found at the following link - https://docs.keeper.io/enterprise-guide/folders#shared-folder
