If you are already a Duo user, you can use your existing Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA) account in Colby’s Okta identification platform. All you need to do is complete a few steps outlined below. Please note that If you are not an existing Duo user, the option to set up a Duo account (as shown below) will not be shown. If you believe that you should see this option, please contact the ITS Support Center at x4222 or support@colby.edu.
Getting Started
- Start at the Okta portal, https://okta.colby.edu, and authenticating with your Colby username and password.
- If you are prompted to choose a security question and picture, please do so. This is part of your initial Okta account setup and activation and must be completed first.
- From the Okta dashboard, click on the ‘Configure and test MFA’ button, as shown below:
- After clicking ‘Configure and Test MFA’ you will see a list of options for MFA factors (shown below), one of which will be ‘Duo Security.’ Note that if you do not see the following image and are instead prompted for a MFA factor, or presented a webpage that states "Okta MFA Configured" then your Okta account is already configured for MFA and you do not need to do any additional setup.
- After clicking ‘Set Up’ for Duo Security you will see the following dialog to begin setting up Duo as your MFA factor.
- After clicking the ‘Setup’ button as shown in the above image you will be prompted to confirm your Duo account by validating using any of your configured Duo options presented to you – you only need to choose one. All of the options will be available to you every time you are prompted for MFA. Note that you may see either of the images below depending on whether you have more than one associated device (i.e. phone and a Yubikey token) in your Duo settings.
Note that you can access your Duo settings, if needed, by clicking the ‘Settings’ button at the upper right corner of the dialog box.
Finishing Up and Testing
After completing the above steps your Duo account is set up as a mutli-factor requirement in Okta. You will be able to select Duo as your MFA validation method for any services in Okta that require it. You can test how this functionality works by clicking on the ‘Configure and test MFA‘ button from the Okta dashboard.
It is recommended that you configure alternate MFA options in Okta in addition to Duo. Click here to learn more about setting up additional factors. This is also the method for making changes to your MFA factors in Okta.
Should you have any additional questions about Okta or Duo, please contact the ITS Support Center at 207-859-4222 (x4222 on campus) or by sending an email to support@colby.edu
