Importing Quiz Questions into the Moodle Question Bank

Summary

This article explains how to upload quiz questions prepared on a local computer directly into the Moodle question bank.

Body

Instructors can import quiz questions from a local computer into a Moodle course question bank to streamline the quiz creation process. This process requires saving questions in a compatible format and uploading the file through the Moodle interface.

Preparing the question file

Before importing, instructors must format the question file to ensure Moodle reads the data correctly.

  • The most common format for simple multiple-choice questions is Aiken format. Files must be saved as plain text files with UTF-8 encoding.
  • Other compatible formats include GIFT format, Moodle XML format, and WebCT format.

Importing the questions into Moodle
Once the file is prepared on the local computer, instructors can load the questions into the course.

  • Navigate to the Moodle course page.
  • Click the More tab in the course navigation menu.
  • Select Question bank from the drop-down menu.
  • Select Import from the drop-down menu at the top left of the page.
  • Select the appropriate file type under the File format section.
  • Click Choose a file... under the Import questions from file section.
  • Click Upload a file in the file picker window.
  • Click Choose File to browse and select the file from the local computer.
  • Click Upload this file.
  • Click Import.
  • Review the list of parsed questions to verify accuracy and click Continue.
