macOS - Upgrading via Self Service

Downloading and Upgrading macOS from Self Service

Upgrade times vary but typically take between 30 - 45 minutes.  This does not include the time to download the installer.

  1. Quit all open Applications
  2. From the Applications Folder, double-click Self Service


     
  3. In the search field, type macOS Big Sur - Upgrade Download.  As you type, the Self Service item will appear


     
  4. Click Download. This brings up the description of the Self Service macOS Big Sur item and a link to this article
     
  5. Click Download. This initiates the download of the macOS Big Sur installer into the Applications folder.  Note: download times vary depending on Internet speed.


     
  6. Once "Install macOS Big Sur" is in the Applications folder, confirm that you have a quit all applications then proceed to next step
     
  7. Double-click Install macOS Big Sur. This will bring up the installer wizard
     
  8. Click Continue
     
  9. Click Agree
     
  10. Click Agree again
     
  11. If there is more than one hard drive shown, single-click Macintosh HD (the hard drive may be labeled something else if you renamed it) then click Continue


     
  12. When / if prompted, type your Colby user name and password then click OK

As the upgrade is performed, the computer will go through several stages (see below image examples).  It is normal for the computer to reboot several times.  Note: times are approximate
