Recording a Second Screen with Kaltura Classroom

Summary

This article describes how to change Kaltura Classroom's recorded input to match the projector.

Body

Some classroom computers are equipped with Kaltura Classroom (often found on a rolling lecture capture cart).  When these systems are connected to the projector, occasionally the user will want to extend the Windows desktop and record only what is being projected.  An example use case is when presenting in Powerpoint, the user would like to record the presentation (which is seen on the projector), but not the Powerpoint Presenter View controls (which is seen on the computer).  To accomplish this, please take the following steps:

  1. Connect the computer to the classroom input with the HDMI cable.
  2. Set Windows to Extended Desktop mode (rather than mirroring).
    1. Right-click on the desktop and click on Display settings.
    2. Under Multiple displays, choose Extend these displays.
  3. Open Kaltura Classroom.  By default, you will likely see the webcam in Input 1, and the desktop in Input 2.
  4. Click on the Configure icon on Input 2.
  5. Change Input Source to reflect the projector, which is often identified with "Extron" in the title.  The change will be reflected in the preview window.
  6. Click Back.
  7. You are now ready to start recording.
